What is OpenAthens?
With OpenAthens, members of the St. Norbert College community can access licensed digital resources both on and off campus. It works behind the scenes to verify your St. Norbert login, giving you seamless access to the same academic materials you’d normally use while connected to the campus network.
Why use OpenAthens?
Licensing deals with content providers typically limit access to users physically on campus. OpenAthens ensures that students, faculty, and staff at St. Norbert College can access those same resources from anywhere, simply by logging in with their St. Norbert username and password.
What’s the difference between EZproxy, OpenAthens, and VPN?
When comparing EZproxy, OpenAthens, and VPN, it’s helpful to think about what each tool is designed to do. VPNs are great for full network access, allowing staff and faculty to use internal tools as if they were on campus. EZproxy and OpenAthens, however, are designed specifically for accessing library and academic resources. OpenAthens improves on EZproxy by using modern identity-based access instead of relying on IP ranges, making it easier to manage access permissions across different publishers and platforms.
